At present the Eliava Institute of Bacteriophage, Microbiology and Virology (IBMV) continues its traditional work in applied Microbiology and Bacteriophage Research. The main aim of the ongoing scientific research is an elaboration of the ecologically safe bio-preparations and working out of the appropriate methodologies for their future applications for human and animal health protection, in agriculture and environmental studies.

The Eliava Institute implements the projects in the following fields of sciences:

At present Eliava scientists proceed with following research directions:

• Investigation of the ethiological structure of the human and animal bacterial pathogens, including antibiotic-resistant nosocomial infections, and development of specific phage preparations.
• Selection of a variety of the specific bacteriophages with the therapeutic potential and their detailed characterization;
• Elaboration of the biological preparations, vaccines, immunological sera, bacteriophages and enzymes against highly contagious human and animal pathogens;
• Ecological monitoring of the bacterial pollution in water environments. Elaboration of the ecologically safe phage based technologies for detection and eradication of the bacterial pathogens in these environments.
• Working out a novel strategy for phage based bio-control of plant bacterial diseases.

Since the fifties of the lost century Eliava Institute’s scientist have elaborated several dozens of bio-preparations, including 15 phage cocktails (mixtures), vaccines, diagnostic and therapeutic immune sera, bacterial preparations and enzymes, etc. Among the above mentioned preparations the following should be especially emphasized;

• Intesti-bacteriophage
• Pyo-bacteriophage
• Intravenous Staphylococcus phage;
• Anthrax vaccine “STI-1”
• Heterogenic Immunoglobulin for treatments of Anthrax
• Improved probiotic bacterial preparations;
• Enzyme “bilidase” (hyalorinidase of bacterial origin)
• Anti-Staphylococcus heterogenic γ-globuline and anatoxin .

During the past decade the Eliava Institute’s scientists have published about 100 abstracts in the abstract books of the international conferences, presented about 30 posters and made 25 talks at the well- known international forums and conferences such as, American Society for Microbiology, Evergreen Phage Biology Meeting, Congress of the European Microbiologists, Congress of World Union of the Microbiology Societies, etc.

The Eliava Institute represents the technical and scientific bases for the Department of Microbiology and Virology of the Tbilisi State University.

Director of the institute Teimuraz Chanishvili at the same time is a founder of the abovementioned department (1970) and its first Head. During the past 50 years up to 100 M.Sc.and PhD thesis have been prepared under the supervision of the Eliava Institute’s scientists.
